Anonymize text before AI

Updated July 1, 2026 - Text privacy guide

Short answer: To anonymize text before AI, replace private details with clear placeholders. Use [name] instead of a real name, [email] instead of a real email, and [account number] instead of the real number. Safemii helps find these details and create a safer version on your phone.

What anonymizing means here

For everyday AI use, anonymizing means removing the details that identify a real person or account while keeping enough meaning for the AI to help. The AI can rewrite a complaint, summarize a letter, or explain a form without seeing the real private parts.

Good replacements

Private detailSafer placeholder
Jane Smith[name]
[email protected][email]
123 Main Street[address]
Policy 847392[policy number]
Dr. Ahmed at City Clinic[doctor] at [clinic]
Case ID 2026-4481[case number]
My child's school name[school]

Keep useful context

The best anonymized text still preserves the job you want the AI to do. Keep roles, dates when they matter, broad categories, and amounts if they are relevant. Remove exact identifiers. For example, "my landlord sent a notice about rent due on [date]" is usually more useful than deleting the entire sentence.

Do not over-anonymize numbers

Some numbers are private identifiers, such as account numbers, policy numbers, ID numbers, phone numbers, and case numbers. Other numbers may be needed for the task, such as a total price, deadline, page count, or percentage. Safemii helps flag likely identifiers, but you decide which numbers are needed for meaning.

Before and after example

Original: "Jane Smith at 123 Main Street called about policy 847392 and wants a reply by Friday." Safer version: "[customer] at [address] called about [policy number] and wants a reply by Friday." The AI can still draft a polite reply, but it does not receive the real name, address, or policy number.

When to black out instead

If the exact layout matters, such as a screenshot or PDF, blacking out the area can be clearer than replacing the text. For plain text, placeholders usually work better because they keep the sentence readable.

Final review

After replacement, read the cleaned text once as if you were a stranger. If a person could still identify the real person, home, account, workplace, child, patient, or client from the remaining context, remove a little more before sending it to AI.
